Macho Men Visit the Doctor Less

  1. The first three words that come to mind when I hear the term “masculine” are strong, stubborn, and invulnerable. Men are to be the leader of the family. Therefore, they feel that they have to be strong and powerful. Also, masculine men feel that they do not need help from anyone so they struggle on their own. Finally, masculine men feel like they are invincible and can do anything without any consequences.

2. Men are pressured into being masculine because they feel that the stronger they are, the more respect people will have for them. This can be a mix between a good thing and bad thing. It is bad because it can create violence. But at the same time, people will respect you and they will not harm you. Men in our society are thought to be leaders. They need to be able to support their families. It can be a good thing because men who are masculine feel the need to be able to protect their families from any harm. But, this can be a bad thing because they may be too overprotective, causing something bad to happen.

Globalization of Eating Disorders HW

“Globalization of Eating Disorders”

1. The media advertises the “dream body” in their ads. They make you think that you need to be big and strong. They make you feel that if you are not muscular you are not attractive.  For women they have to keep their body images up with the sickly skinny models that the media finds attractive. If the media did not advertise that being skinny makes you beautiful, most Americans would not be struggling with eating disorders like they are today. For example, the woman that lives in Fiji, who did not have television, had no problem with being comfortable in their own skin. But, once they had the television station that showed them that being fat is considered ugly, they began to worry about their body images.

2. I feel that woman stress more on their body image in American culture. Because of the fact that most people in America that have eating disorders are woman. Also, you always see girls who hang pictures of models on their wall so they can have the “dream bodies” that the woman have. But for men, they are supposed to be big and strong or else they are portrayed as wimps.

HW #3

1. The event described in the text is that within the next few years, they predict that there will be a catastrophic incident brought about by a robot making a decision independent of human oversight. I feel that if they manufacture the robots correctly then there should be no problems with them acting up. However if something happens to go wrong then I believe that we might truly have a “war against robots.” The public reaction to a “war against robots” would be chaos. People would not know what to do; people would panic and violence would break out everywhere.

2. After reading this text I think that it is very likely that they will come up with an Artificial Intelligence that does everything that a human does. However, there is a down side to that, being that if there is a robot that can do everything that a human can do what is the need for the human anymore. It takes away from our human identities.

3. Positives- Help the elderly, never makes mistakes like a human would. Negatives- Less employment, takes away from human identities.

4. Yes my computer has failed on me before when I was writing a research paper one day and it just randomly shut down causing me to lose all my work. So that proves that computers can fail sometimes just like humans.

Hw #2 Morality

5 Feb
  1. My gut reaction to the question posted in the beginning of this article was that Mother Teresa is considered the most admirable so after the author gave some facts my answer stayed the same. I knew that Mother Teresa ministered poor people and in my eyes that makes her admirable.
  2. The two people that I admire the most would have to be my parents because they are always here for me when I need anything. My moral judgment would be based on the loyalty aspect of morality.
  3. No I believe that there is no such thing as universal morality because everyone has different opinions and beliefs.
  4. Harm, fairness, community (or group loyalty), authority and purity are the five elements of morality. I feel that Americans rank first in authority because we are one of the world’s leading countries.
